Martin Kramer spent three months in Autumn 2004 at the Washington
Institute for Near East Policy, where he delivered three addresses: “When
Minorities Rule,” “Shiites and U.S. Policy Between Allies and
Adversaries,” and “Islam, Islamism, and U.S. Foreign Policy.” In
Spring 2005, he spoke on the state of Middle Eastern studies at these
venues: the 30th anniversary symposium of Georgetown’s Center for
Contemporary Arab Studies; the inaugural conference of Brandeis University’s
Crown Center for Middle Eastern Studies; a conference on academic
integrity at Columbia University; and a conference on “Orientalism and
Conspiracy” at Hamburg University. He also attended the U.S.-Islamic
World Forum in Qatar, and made research visits to Egypt, Jordan, and the
United Arab Emirates.
